Jasper National Park is home to some truly remarkable waterfalls, and in this regard it truly is one of the best National Parks in Canada. The vast majority of them are easily accessible, but there are a few that require some effort.


So, you’re heading into Jasper National Park and all you care about is seeing some breathtaking waterfalls? Jasper National Park waterfalls are very impressive - and in our opinion are better than any found in Banff! There are several waterfalls nears Jasper, Alberta. Well, we have compiled this great list you which features all of the must see waterfalls in Jasper National Park.

Sunwapta Falls

These falls are quite possibly the most impressive within Jasper National Park and they are an absolute must visit. The trail to the lower falls is only a total of 3.2km (2mi), is very well marked and quite easy to manage with only 146m of elevation gain it should take you just over an hour to complete the full hike.


If you’re set on completing this trail, we highly encourage you to set out in the morning before 10am because the trail can become absolutely packed with tourists and you’ll be struggling to take a photo.


Athabasca Falls - The Most Impressive Jasper National Park Waterfall

Probably the most beautiful waterfall in Jasper National Park, Athabasca Falls, Jasper are very easily accessible along a paved path that stretches just over 1 km (0.6 miles). This is really more of a hike than a walk, but the views are not to be overlooked.


The backdrops of mountains and trees offer photographs unlike no other in the park. These views are just as spectacular in the winter and give you a wonderful icicle paradise.



Tangle Falls

Located in the Icefields Parkways portion of Jasper National Park, this waterfall is often overlooked because of it’s very close proximity to the highway, but is an absolute must stop. 


There is a parking lot that you can pull off into, and take a brief walk up to capture some remarkable photographs. Reaching this viewpoint requires minimal effort - just be sure you are safe when you cross the highway!



Maligne Canyon

This trail, alongside the deepest canyon in Jasper National Park (more than 50m - 164ft) and offers you nearly 4km (2.4 miles) of beautiful views. Watch the water race between the rocky edges and slam itselfs through the narrow passages.


Parts of the trail are paved and easily passable; there are also 6 easy to access bridges that offer amazing views. This destination is arguably more beautiful in the winter, and the Maligne Canyon Icewalk is a must, featured on our list of best winter activities.


Stanley Falls

This waterfall often goes completely missed by most tourists who visit Jasper National Park. The trailhead is slightly hidden 15.5km north of the Columbia Icefields. The trailhead if often referred to as “Beauty Creek Trailhead”.


This very short hike is only 2.9km in length (1.8mi) in length and contains only 125m of elevation gain. It is a very short hike along loose and hard dirt that ends in some truly remarkable views - you should complete it in less than 1.5 hours.



Punchbowl Falls


Located near the Miette Hot Springs, this waterfall is just a short walk off the road and is worth a quick stop. The waterfall itself is quite small, but the waterfall drops into a beautiful bowl filled with pristine water surrounded by some lush greenery.



Geraldine Waterfall


This waterfall is probably the most difficult to get to, so unless you’re up for completing a day hike we highly recommend you forgo this hike.


There are a few waterfalls along this trail, but recommending turning around once you reach the second waterfall. This waterfall is located 4.3km from the trailhead - making this an 8.6km (5.3mi) hike containing 418m of elevation gain. You should be able to complete this in roughly 5 hours.


This trail is very slippery with plenty of large rocks. The trail is not maintained well by Parks Canada so please expect plenty of deadfall.
